Tools for the Digital Teacher

What should teachers in the year 2005 be expected to do with technology? This blog outlines a beginning.

Five years ago I taught third grade in a town near Lake Erie and Buffalo, NY. I found that I could not EFFECTIVELY teach math and reading to my entire class. I learned that small group instruction using flexible groups was the key to a well run classroom. The G3 Macs in my classroom were a huge help because I could use the computer as a learning center, not a baby-sitting tool (as I see in many classes today).

What does one need to know in order to use the computers effecitively? Well, I think knowing how to leverage the resources of the Internet is important. In order to do this, one needs the proper tools in the form of web applications. I would suggest:

* a class web page
* a portable bookmarking system
* a digital assessment tool
* a place to display their student's work, both photographs and text

Setting up the above tools will increase student motivation, focus learning and thus reduce searching, provide better communication with home and enable you to work with small groups!

The following tools are used by me and will help get one started.

* MyTeacherPages.com- a web editing tool with a modest fee
* Del.icio.us - a portable bookmarking system that is free
* Rubistar - an assessment tool that enables one to write rubrics with ease
* Quizstar - a place to organize, create and share quizzes
* The Poster Project and Web Worksheet Wizard - two programs that make publishing student work simple
* Blogger - a place to post thoughts
* United Streaming - a pethora of instructional videos at your disposal
* btcactus.org - a place that has links to all the places above
