The World-wide Learning Community is Here, so Share Something with Them ;-)

In theory, anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world can look at your web site, your blog and...your ideas. Think about that!

Do you want to get some perspective on that thought?Well, Dr. Scott McLeod and Karl Fish have created a presentation that will show you how connected we are because of the Internet.

If you are at school, you will not be able to see this because it is hosted on You Tube - please watch it from a non-filtered internet connection.

This presentation can be scary if you let it, but it can also be exciting. We teachers have the potential to educate people we will never meet. We teachers can also pull in great lesson plans and web resources into our own teaching because the web makes it so easy.

In this trail, you are going to contribute to that learning community. by helping me curricularize web resources - from a New York State perspective at least - by bookmarking these resources using del.icio.us and sharing your thoughts about how to teach with them on a Google Site. The resources you bookmark will be organized on my web site using dynamic del.icio.us links (this means that the web resource list will grow as you bookmark more sites).

I will reorganize this pool of resources according to New York State Standard and Performance indicators.

You will be able to access these organized resources when you leave the course and share them with your colleagues at school.

So, let's get started by thinking about these questions:

  1. How do you share ideas, not necessarily web resources, with your colleagues now?

  2. How do you share web resources?

  3. How do you feel about being part of a world-wide learning community? What responsibility do you feel you have to your class, your colleagues in your school, your colleagues in the profession and students all over the world?

You can respond to any of the above by posting a comment. If you have any questions, please post a comment to this post. I will reply back - you can post anonymously or with a Nom de plume.

Right now, I share ideas mainly through discussion or though notes/handouts used at meetings. I usually share web resources by e-mailing a link or simply writing the web address down.

Being part of a world-wide learning community I feel I must keep myself up to date with new technology on a daily basis. I am responsible for my students learning, making sure they have the knowledge necessary to function using todays technology. By posting blogs and creating a website, I am able to share my knowledge and feelings and will educate others.

  3. I usually share via email. No one mails things anymore. I feel privileged to live in a time where the internet was just coming in to people’s homes when I was growing up and now I really don’t know what I would do with out it. I love the internet. I work at a bike shop and when people have a question I can’t answer, we go right to the information super highway! I feel a responsibility to my students to prepare them for the future, keep them safe and provide them with a complex learning environment.

Currently, I simply email my colleagues web resources that I like or have found effective. I am excited to learn about a new, easy way to share valuable resources with others.

at the present moment the only ways that i share documents or information is through email or by copying down the websites URL. learning other ways to share information through the Internet is definitely something i can see using alot in the my future.

Right now I share web resources using email or Ill write down the URL and share it with people. Being apart of a world wide learning community I think will help me share my information with others quickly, and I can get information from others quickly. This will allow us to collaborate and find new things to use in the classroom to make learning fun and interesting to the students.

I share resources through email primarily. This involves copy and pasting the URL of a website. On occasion, I have shared ideas and resources through discussion boards, and now blogs.

I feel the responsibility to this form of teaching is larger then people think. I feel that if the internet become too powerful, children wont think, analyze, evaluate, create. I think they will just go to google and find it. To me that is not educating the child its showing them how to find the answer and fill in the blank. I know the internet is growing and becoming more powerful but making sure its taught properly I believe is key.

I share my web resources through email and flash drives. I find myself anxious to share more web resources than some individuals are apt to receive. I feel that some colleagues are not as receptive/open to new/useful information. I like the idea of creating a network of availability and sharing my findings with others. Isn't that the true purpose of research-to share your findings/knowledge with others?

I share my ideas mainly through conversation right now. Web resources also can be shared through conversation, by writing them down, or by emailing. I think it will be neat to learn a new way to share ideas that a lot of people don't know about yet.

Right now I share ideas by word of mouth. If I come across a really good website that will be beneficial to my colleagues I will email the link to them.

Right now I share my ideas by the word of mouth and if it is really good I might use e-mail to spread the word. Being a part of the world-wide learning community is a little scary. Simply for the fact that you want to help, but at the same time you want to make sure what you are putting out there is truly beneficial to others. I guess it just makes sure that you know what you are talking about and that you keep up with educational world.

I think that it is great that everyone can have the access to bring the world wide web community together. I think that as with everything it comes with a price. This access also allows predators to get at our children if they are not careful about what they do on the web. I do not know how to make everything bad go away but our children's safety should come first.

It's a little daunting at first to realize that anything I have posted on the internet can be accessed by an enormous amount of people. It forces me to think about the content I am posting on the internet, and to make sure I am not giving strangers access to my personal life.

Through the years my view of the internet has changed. I used the internet as a connection between myself, my friends, and people who share my interests. Now that I am approaching the internet from a more professional standpoint, I can better see the connection between myself and my students with anyone in the world who can connect to the internet as well.

I think that what comes with this realization is the responsibility to protect myself, my friends, and my family by keeping personal information secure. I also think that we share the responsibility of making sure the content of the internet remains as truthful as possible. Often information is posted that has not been researched or provided with accurate resources.

I e-mail things to other people or I call them. Using snail mail or a lot of other things just takes too long.

I think it would be a good idea to connect with people from around the world. It will help people understand more cultures and gain new ideas or ways of thinking that would have never been possible.

I share ideas with my colleagues by talking with them about activities and lesson plans. We share any resources and materials we may need. If there are any good websites to go to for other ideas we trade them through email or in person.

I haven't really been using email that much until this class. I love Gmail and find it easier to access things and share information. I am excited to teach my students with how advanced technology is now. It will make lessons more interesting and hopefully the students will be more involved and enthusiastic to learn.

I currently share web resources by orally telling others about them, writing down websites and handing them to others. Sometimes I also email others the website URL.

  21. Currently I share through email. I send my colleagues websites, and useful information. I also communicate through email for group presentations, it makes things much easier. On occasion I've used discussion boards, but can't say I've use blogs very much.

I share my ideas by talking with my friends and colleagues. I also have a website right now that houses my portfolio electronically. Anyone is free to look at that and see my lesson plans and ideas about teaching.

  23. We share our ideas at level meetings. This happens everyday. Outside of the level I will share ideas with people if I see them at lunch or in the hallway.

Sometimes we will be given lists and ill make copies for my coworkers.

It is cool to be part of a world-wide learning community. I think that I need to to more communicating through the web. It would help connect everyone and then people can get the information with the push of a button.

  24. I share my ideas through communication with my colleagues. I share web resources through email and sometimes myspace or facebook. I feel a responsibility to my students to prepare them for the future, keep them safe and provide them with a complex learning environment. Often information is posted that has not been researched or provided with accurate resources but we as teachers should provide good resources to help the students become better learners.

  25. Usually right now, I share my ideas through email with attachments. I also use face book with my colleagues. The web is full of resources and ideas, and I feel that more and more students spend time on the computer. So, we have to keep up to date with new technology, because it is a right we need to give our students. They will have more knowledge, and we need to keep up,so we can use technology to teach. I feel that is where all education is going.

Currently I share my ideas through discussions, handouts, snail mail and email. As a 30-year-old technical neophyte I have yet to send my first text message from my pay-per-minute cell phone or learn what a "flash drive" is.

I still send hand written letters and pay bills using my checkbook and a stamp.

As a future teacher, however, I understand the importance of technology and my responsibility to provide them with the necessary tools to be successful in today's world.

  27. Right now I like to use Google, and email to share my ideas. The internet has many available resources to use; I just need to learn how to use more of them. Technology is becoming more and more advanced, and we need to advance with it. Our students are learning how to do more things on the web, and they spend more time on the internet. We need to share our ideas with them and plans on the computer. We need to collaborate with our students on the internet, because it's more accessible to get in touch with them outside of school. I also think it is a good way for students to work together on projects also.

I usually share my ideas through either verbal discussions with others or through email. I look forward to learn how to connect and share in new ways. I think it's really great that we can communicate and share information with students in other countries so easily because of the advancement of computers.
